Bigger Isn't Always Better: Understanding Carat Weight, Stone Shapes & Proportions

When designing a custom ring, one of the first questions many people ask is:

"How many carats should I get?"

It's a fair question, but carat weight is often misunderstood. Many people assume that a larger carat number automatically means a larger-looking stone. In reality, two stones with the same carat weight can look very different in size depending on their shape, proportions, and dimensions.

If you're designing an everyday ring that you'll wear for years to come, understanding these differences can help you make a more informed decision.

Carat Weight vs. Visual Size

A common misconception is that carat refers to a stone's size. In reality, carat is simply a measurement of weight.

Think of it this way: two people can weigh the same amount but appear completely different based on their height and build. Gemstones work similarly. Two stones can both weigh 4 carats, yet one may appear noticeably larger than the other when viewed from above.

This is why we always encourage clients to look beyond the carat number and focus on the overall appearance of the stone.

Different Shapes Create Different Looks

The shape of a stone plays a significant role in how large it appears and how it sits on the hand.

Oval Cut

Oval stones are loved for their elongated appearance and ability to create more finger coverage. They often appear larger than other shapes of the same carat weight and can create an elegant, lengthening effect on the hand.

Pear Cut

Pear-shaped stones combine softness and uniqueness. Their tapered silhouette often creates the illusion of a larger stone while offering a distinctive look.

Marquise Cut

Known for its pointed ends and elongated body, the marquise cut maximizes surface area and can appear significantly larger than many other shapes of the same weight.

Round Cut

The round cut remains a timeless favourite. While it offers exceptional brilliance, it typically appears smaller than elongated shapes of the same carat weight due to the way its weight is distributed.

Finding the Right Proportions

When designing a ring, dimensions and proportions often matter more than the carat weight itself.

A beautifully proportioned stone that complements your hand can often look more balanced and impactful than a larger stone that feels out of scale. The right length-to-width ratio, stone shape, and setting style can completely change the overall look of a ring.

This is especially important for everyday jewellery, where comfort, wearability, and personal style are just as important as size.

Why Seeing Stones in Person Makes a Difference

While photos and measurements can provide guidance, nothing compares to seeing different shapes and sizes in person.

Many clients come into the design process with a specific carat weight in mind, only to discover that a completely different shape or proportion is what they truly love once they see it on their hand.

At VELA Jewels Co., we now offer private, in-person consultations to help clients explore different stone shapes, sizes, and proportions before committing to a design. Rather than visiting a traditional showroom, we bring the experience directly to you, allowing you to compare options and make confident decisions from the comfort of your own space.

Because when it comes to designing a piece you'll wear every day, the goal isn't simply to choose the biggest stone but it's to create a ring that feels perfectly proportioned, beautifully balanced, and uniquely yours.
